The Vine Trail
The Vine Trail
Leaving the Vine we head up the beautiful Chapman’s peak drive and our first hill for approx 900 metres before we swing a left onto the trail at the historical East Fort. Our first Major climb of approx 700 metres awaits – up the mighty Blackburn Ravine (keep an eye open for SA trail star Ryan Sandes, as this is one of Ryan’s favourite training spots). From the top we look back across the stunning bay to the Karbonkelberg Massif as we refuel.
The Skyline panorama path is trail running heaven – perfect single track along some stunning ridges as we pass Black eagles soaring and head across the tops of Blackburn minor, Blackburn major until we summit Noordhoek peak. 100 metres down a jeep track until we pick up the Amphitheatre trail which winds us down and down towards Silvermine dam for a well-deserved break and swim (perfect spot). After a swim, a rest and nutrition break we head up Silvermine Crags and across a lovely little ridge line with views across False Bay to the West and the Swartkop mountains to the north before a gentle sweep through forested trails and a short sharp climb to Elephants Eye cave overlooking the winelands of Constantia. We continue from here to the second highest point in Cape Town after Maclears Beacon – Constantiaberg Mast.
We are now at the highest point of our run as we look out across the entire peninsula in all directions. Another well-deserved rest before we descend on the final section and dependant on tired legs we either head straight down the other side or tired legs your run leader may take you down the North West Ridge, a more challenging descent.
As you descend the beautiful single track across the Manganese mines we will finally arrive back at The Vine and marvel at what we achieved as well as nod sagely as Cape Town technical running is discussed.

‘’Coming from the Netherlands, I love both mountains and running (but unfamiliar with the trails), The Vine was the perfect running company to help me get into trail running. Innes and team have a great, well organised setup, with a variety of routes. It’s very inspirational to run with super experienced guys but also being able to safely slow down where needed. Under supervision of a guide.’’ Esther, April 2019
"Innes has created an amazing community at The Vine. The trail runs he organises and always fun, challenging and safe. Added to that some of the best coffee and food in Cape Town post run makes The Vine a must for any runners visiting the Mother City". Ian, Feb 2019
‘’The vine is an extraordinary place that invites runners of all abilities. The community, sense of adventure and the dynamics of Innes and the team make one feel at home. The beauty of Hout Bay, as a location and with access to Table Mountain within running distance places the Vine at the zenith of Cape Town trail running.’’ Adam, September 2018
“Many great trail adventures had with Innes Smith and The Vine on some of Table Mountain’s lesser known routes. A knowledgeable guide with a wealth of trail running experience…” Dale, July 2018
‘’I’ve discovered the most exquisite parts of the Table Mountain range since running with Innes and The Vine. Every run is an absolute adventure, but I always feel safe enough to say yes and go for it. And I’m never ever disappointed. Innes is really friendly, personable and approachable, and he’s an absolute mountain goat and can run with the best. Only come if you want to have the best time! And you can look forward to expanding your definition of trail in the most beautiful city in the world’’ Suzanne, May 2018
